WHAT IT IS · WHERE IT COMES FROM

The Challenge Coin Tradition

A challenge coin is a small, die-struck medallion — typically 38–50 mm across — bearing the insignia, emblem, or motto of an organization. It is presented as a mark of belonging, recognition, or achievement.

A Living Tradition

Challenge coins trace their roots back over a century through military tradition. These small medallions represent unit pride, recognize outstanding service, and forge bonds between those who carry them.

The modern practice took hold in the early 1960s when commanders began minting unique unit coins as a mark of belonging and excellence. The tradition quickly spread across all military branches and, over decades, into law enforcement, fire services, government agencies, veterans associations, and the corporate world.

Today, receiving a challenge coin is one of the highest informal honours in uniform service — and a cherished keepsake for corporate milestones and personal achievements alike.

FAQ

Custom Challenge Coins — Common Questions

Everything you need to know before ordering your custom challenge coin. Still have questions? Talk to a coin specialist.

What is a challenge coin?

A challenge coin is a small, die-struck medallion — typically 38–50 mm in diameter and 3–4 mm thick — bearing the insignia, emblem, or motto of an organization. Originally a military tradition, challenge coins are presented as a mark of belonging, recognition of service, or achievement, and are now widely used by police, fire departments, government agencies, veterans' associations, and corporations.

How much do custom challenge coins cost?

Pricing depends on diameter, thickness, plating, enamel colours, edge style, quantity, and packaging. As a rough guide, a standard 38 mm antique-brass challenge coin with soft enamel starts at a modest unit price that drops significantly with quantity. Premium options — solid silver or 24K gold, hard enamel, custom shapes, edge engraving — increase the price proportionally. Every quote we issue is itemised so you can see exactly what each option costs.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no minimum order. We mint single pieces, small runs of 5–50, and bulk orders up to 1 million coins. Each production tier uses the appropriate process — embossing or photo-etching for single pieces, full die-striking from quantities of around 50 upward.

How long does production take?

Standard production is 20–30 business days from approval of your free design proof. The free design proof itself is delivered within 24 hours of receiving your enquiry. Rush production is available for tight deadlines — contact us with your target date and we will quote an expedited timeline.

What materials and finishes are available?

We offer brass, bronze, copper, antique silver, .999 fine silver, 24K gold plating, solid 24K gold, black nickel, and more. Each material can be paired with high-polish, antique, sandblasted, or two-tone finishes, and with soft or hard enamel colour fills. See our Materials & Finishes table above for a side-by-side comparison.

What is the difference between soft enamel and hard enamel?

Soft enamel sits below the raised metal lines, giving the coin a tactile, textured surface. Hard enamel is polished flush with the metal for a smooth, jewellery-grade finish. Hard enamel is more durable and visually premium; soft enamel is more affordable and is excellent for everyday wear.

What is the difference between die-struck and cast challenge coins?

Die-struck coins are stamped at high pressure between hardened steel dies, producing sharp, crisp relief and a dense, hard finish. Cast coins are made by pouring molten metal into a mould — better for complex 3D shapes but with slightly softer detail. Most military, police, and corporate challenge coins are die-struck.

Can challenge coins be made in custom shapes?

Yes. We routinely produce challenge coins in non-round shapes — shields, dog-tags, badges, geographic outlines, and fully custom die-cut designs. Custom shapes add minor tooling time but no major surcharge for production runs of 100+.

Do you offer a free design proof?

Yes — every enquiry receives a free professional digital design proof within 24 hours. Unlimited revisions are included until you approve the final artwork. There is no charge or obligation, even if you decide not to proceed.

Do you keep the mold for future re-orders?

Yes. We store your tooling and dies for three years at no extra cost, so re-orders ship faster and at a lower per-unit cost. Most clients re-order every 6–24 months as their unit grows or commemorates new milestones.

What file formats do you accept for artwork?

Vector formats are ideal (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF) but we also work from high-resolution PNG, JPG, and TIFF. If you only have a sketch or rough idea, our in-house design team will turn it into a production-ready vector for free.

Do you ship outside Canada?

Yes. While we are based in Canada and ship Canada-wide as a priority, we also export to the United States, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and many other countries. International shipping is fully tracked and customs documentation is handled by our team.
